In all reality it's now been 20 years, 1 month and one week since I graduated from Belen High School. yikes. A lot has changed in that little town south of Albququerque and a lot has not.
When I first received the invite last November I really wasn't sure if I was going to attend. Over the past 6+ months I've wavered; yea, nay, yea, nay....I'd of plucked all the daisy petals in the world by now if I'd had any. And it wasn't until I drove up to Pam's wedding last month and had buckoo hours of alone time to think about it that I decided that I would, in the long run, regret if I did not attend. It'll be interesting that's for sure and truly frightening or rather anxiety provoking. And naturally I have no Xanax in the med. cabinet or even an available refill from the doc.
20 years....TWENTY YEARS....TWO DECADES....two sets of 10 YEARS. My gawwwd....the last time I saw 90% of those "kids" was 1988, when I was 18 years old. How exactly do you or do you even...pick-up from w
here was left off? I've done a lot with my life but am not where I desire to be, that's for sure.
I don't want for this event to turn into a "Look what I've done with my life" or a "Isn't my husband sooo perfect?" kind of BS. But I know how strong that urge can and will be, especially given that so many of us left Belen because we knew there was more to life than....well...Belen, NM.
Friday, July 11th is the beginning of the reunion weekend and starts at the Atomic Cantina, about 1/2 mile from where I live. Turns out that one of my former classmates is the owner of the place. Who'd a thunk.
Saturday is the big ole dinner gala. and then on Sunday there's gonna be a picnic in Belen and a tour of the high school. The high school has changed a a 1,000x's over since 1988 at least from what I've seen from I-25, which runs next it. Our senior year a sophmore student and his dad, drunk and high, burnt down the English wing and the senior locker hall received some nasty smoke damage.
What happened to those two I haven't a clue. Just one more example of how messed up a town I lived in.
Now I've got to get busy working on images to provide for the reunion as I've promised. Cause we know how much free time I already have!
